Marmot Conservation
Marmot Conservation Efforts
Marmot Village, in collaboration with Dr. Marmot, who is active on social media, is engaged in conservation and anti-poaching efforts for marmots worldwide.
While indoor keeping of marmots might protect them from natural predators and eliminate the need for hibernation, which is taxing on their life functions, it may not be sufficient for them to carry out their natural ecological activities. However, the marmots at Marmot Village were all bred in captivity by breeders overseas specifically for pets, and these individuals would not be able to survive in the wild. Some of them are even sold from environments that are far from appropriate. Since marmots are not widely distributed in Japan, there isn't much information about them online, but marmots are very wary creatures and extremely difficult to artificially breed.
Our company is opposed to the artificial breeding of marmots in inappropriate environments. However, a few such individuals are still put up for export each year overseas. To prevent these marmots from ending up in unsuitable conditions, Marmot Village has immediately purchased and rescued them whenever information became available, ensuring they receive proper medical care in Japan. Although Marmot Village is advertised as a "marmot cafe," it primarily functions as a marmot rescue facility. Naturally, we have identified all breeders to prevent forced sales overseas and are collaborating with responsible authorities to ensure that individuals raised in inappropriate environments are not sold or exported. Currently, we are in a situation where we can only buy and protect them once they are put up for sale. However, the authorities in the three countries where these breeders are located are now considering regulations for marmots, which are classified as wild animals.
Marmot poaching is also a global issue. In the Alps and Himalayas, where marmots live, human surveillance is difficult, leading to a more serious problem. While working behind the scenes, we are primarily focused on eradicating unethical marmot breeders and lobbying for stricter enforcement against poaching. To prevent misinformation from spreading based solely on past animal cafe stories or superficial information on social media, we will also be sharing records of our conservation efforts moving forward.
Marmot Village is looking for people who will help us address these issues by raising awareness of the current situation of marmots. Until now, only a few individuals aware of these circumstances have funded and carried out these activities. We would be grateful if you could recognize this background and the paramount importance of marmot conservation.
To our customers who have read this page to the end, thank you very much. We hope that with this understanding, you will show love to the marmots who once could not even see the sun and viewed humans with fear. As Marmot Village, all staff of Marmot Co., Ltd. will strive to ensure that all marmots worldwide can live happily.
